Last Friday, Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves welcomed Romania’s Minister for Research, Innovation and Digitalization Sebastian Burduja to Washington, D.C. During their meeting, the Deputy Secretary commended Romania for its efforts to adopt a 5G security law that allows Romania to address threats to critical telecommunications infrastructure and assured the Minister of the United States’ continued support as Romania works to counter malign influences in this critical sector. The two also discussed Romania’s efforts to expand two-way trade with the U.S. and attract U.S. investment including in the information and communications technology sector. In addition, they discussed the importance of secure communications and of the positive role of governments in fostering open and interoperable telecommunications networks, as outlined in the Prague Proposals on Telecommunications Supplier Diversity. They also discussed the upcoming Three Seas Initiative Summit and Business Forum that Romania will host this year and opportunities for increasing private sector participation in the event.
