Today, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo met with Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamikawa Yoko. During the meeting, Secretary Raimondo expressed her condolences to Japan and the families of the victims of the New Year’s Day earthquake and reiterated President Biden’s commitment to supporting Japan and the Japanese people to recover from this tragedy. The two also discussed the successful Ministerial meeting of the U.S.-Japan Economic Policy Consultative Committee (the Economic “2+2”) in November 2023 and the shared desire to sustain the momentum to achieve the objectives outlined in the joint statement, working together with the U.S. Department of State and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. Secretary Raimondo also thanked the Minister for Japan’s continued partnership and leadership in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) and looks forward to working closely with Minister Kamikawa to operationalize the IPEF Supply Chain Agreement, Clean Economy Agreement, and Fair Economy Agreement, so that the economies of the IPEF partners benefit from the economic cooperation envisioned under IPEF.
