Florida Attorney Debi Chalik Comments on Summer Parasailing Safety
Mar 3, 2023
Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) June 7, 2016 – Parasailing is a popular summertime activity among both Florida residents and visitors. However, it can result in serious injuries and even death due to the negligence of parasailing operators who disregard the safety of their customers. Accidents can arise from equipment failure, reckless boating, inexperienced staff or failure to monitor for adverse weather conditions.
Choosing a parasailing company that is licensed and well-established can decrease the risk of parasailing accidents. Serious injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, back injuries, soft tissue damage and broken bones can occur if safety standards are ignored. Before participating in parasailing activities, individuals should request to see the company’s safety records and check for weather warnings. In addition, they should wear appropriate clothing for the flight and complete any necessary safety training or medical checkups.
Personal injury lawyer, Debi Chalik was recently interviewed by Michael J. Swanson on America’s Top Trial Lawyers®.
“Parasailing accidents are all too common in Florida, especially during the summer months. It is important to be alert for warning signs,” said Debi Chalik, personal injury attorney with Chalik & Chalik Injury Lawyers. “Check whether the parasailing operator is licensed and review the company policy on weather cancellations. People should also ask to inspect parasailing equipment to ensure it is well maintained. Rusted metal, frayed straps and failure of staff to answer basic questions could be red flags.”
Chalik & Chalik Injury Lawyers advocated for parasailing regulations. The White-Miskill Act for Parasailing became Florida law in 2014. The legislation formally defines commercial parasailing and regulates parasailing activities.
Under the Act operators must maintain liability insurance, keep weather logs and meet Coast Guard standards for transporting passengers, among other requirements. However, the bill does not set any standards for training or inspecting parasailing operators. It also does not account for the regulation of parasailing equipment.
“Florida residents and visitors now have at least some degree of protection against careless parasailing companies that do not make safety a priority,” said Chalik. “However, they should make sure to take all the necessary precautions to avoid accidents and injuries before participating in parasailing activities this summer.”
