Northville, MI (Law Firm Newswire) July 27 2022 – Army Secretary C. Wormuth signed a directive that provides more improvements for soldiers to progress in their careers and have time to care for their families. This recent news seemed to fly under the radar but is most welcome to soldiers dealing with pregnancy and postpartum issues.

This latest initiative, referred to as the Army’s Parenthood, Pregnancy, & Postpartum directive, features welcomed policy changes and program improvements. The improvements include:

Increasing family care plan flexibility.
Expanding postpartum training and operational deferments.
Creating stabilization while receiving fertility treatments.
Extending physical fitness exemptions and the Army Body Composition Program.
Permitting professional military education attendance while pregnant.
Standardizing leave to convalesce in the event of a pregnancy loss.

The main thrust behind the recent updates to policy aims to create a better environment for soldiers, so they do not have to choose between family and service. “Service member’s health benefits during pregnancy need to be addressed. More options like these are welcomed. Our veterans deserve that,” stated James Fausone, a Michigan veterans attorney.

The directive updated six existing policies and added six new ones, thanks to feedback from soldiers. These latest changes affect over 400,000 parents, which includes 29,000 single dads. Shockingly, single dads outnumber single moms in a three to one ratio.

Four of the components were requirements stated by Congress, and the Army expanded on those requirements to ensure soldiers could improve the quality of life and health for all parents.
